| I've heard two schools of thought. If the goal is to burn fat, I've read an early morning cardio workout should be done on an empty stomach so that fat stores are used more quickly. Other sources say better to have carbs in the system. Thoughts?

I wouldn't worry too much about morning vs. evening workouts. Whichever you prefer. Working at a lower intensity will help train your body to burn fat stores. Your body will always have enough carbohydrate stores for an hour or so of exercise. I try to always work out on an empty stomach, mainly because it is more comfortable - particularly for high intensity.

Aha! Great question!
You talked about the "two schools of thought". What are the reasons for each school? Working out pre-breakfast is good because there's nothing for your body to burn, so it'll burn itself. The other school says get something in your system, the body will burn that first THEN your body, and it won't hurt the body by breaking down muscle first (which happens). What does Mens Health and Muscle&Fitness say about it? (coupled with a little personal experience?)
Workouts before breakfast shouldn't be high intensity, nor for an extended period of time. The lack of calories in your system causes your body to go into a catabolic and conservative state, not to mention the whole, your-body-needs-to-slowly-need-calories-to-decide-to-break-down-fat thing. It's different types of respiration, college Bio bay-bay. Aerobic, anerobic, lactic fermentation, blah blah. So go easy, but it's a key part of the workout-get-thin-plan. Come back and get some simple carbs in you, then right back to complex and protein. Good luck!

An early morning cardio gets your metabolism up for the rest of the day. It also helps you be more regular as the events of the day do not impede you. This article suggest a 300% change b/w morning cardio and other times of the day.
My suggestion is to have a glass of juice or a protein shake/mix before you step out and another protein shake on your return.

| My weight loss has been more steady since I followed this routine. GNC N.O. Amplified, a protein bar (snickers marathon tastes great), granola bar about 45 minutes before the workout. 20 oz. of water along with that too. The workout is 60 minutes, running or spinning, and then 10 minutes in the hot tub. I can go longer and harder, developed more muscle mass and dropped fat and weight. A creatine regiment also helps rebuilding muscle faster which will help from being sore and tired. I have lost 36 lbs. since August 1st with 28 more to go. Sensable diet control is essential.

They all burn fat - the key is to keep the intensity low to burn the most - 60-65% max heart rate. I would suggest starting with something low-impact like an elliptical machine or cycling or starting out really slowly with running/jogging.
