Recently, when I type in foods that I know are in the database, I randomly get the "no matches found" error in the drop-down box. I know that these exist because I'd entered them originally and found them reliably in previous searches.

Also, do you have a format you'd prefer for entering custom foods, as other people can access what I enter?

Please give me a specific example. If it's in the database the search will find it. Regarding the format, just fill in the required fields (food description, serving size, calories, carbs, fat, protein). It's best if you can just copy the information exactly from the nutrition label.

This has happened to many different foods, which is why I didn't give a specific example.

But, for example, it has happened when I type "Dr Pepper". I know it's there, because I entered it, and I've used it countless times since them. (I'm a bit of an addict.) Sometimes, I'll type it in, and the drop-down box will find it right away. Sometimes, as I type, I'll see the item, but as I'm typing, it'll disappear from the drop-down search box and I'll get the red words telling me the item doesn't exist. (I know I didn't misspell it.) Sometimes, the item doesn't even show up at all, as though it searched, and nothing was ever found.

I have seen this problem too. It's not the same every time. Sometimes it will come up, sometimes it won't. I've found that it's easier if you just use one word, for instance search "pepper" I think that if you've entered the original nutrition facts your entry will be the first on the list.

Do you notice a javascript error (bottom left of the status bar)? I'm not really sure what to tell you. The search works with a 'LIKE' clause in the database, meaning that it searches all of the food names for the exact text you type in, anywhere in the name. So, for example, if you type in 'dr' for the beginning of dr pepper, you're going to get a ton of results because it's just too broad. The more results the longer it will take to return. For me, typing in 'Dr. ' with the space returned three results that were all Dr. Pepper related. Pepper is also a really common term within the food database. Anyway, sorry I don't have a solution for you. If you notice anything else that might help me troubleshoot, let me know. Oh, and if it isn't finding your food, you can always reload the page (by clicking on the 'Log Entry' menu item) and it will likely work after that.

Do you think there could be a way to import nutritional/lable information from a different website if your database doesn't have it?  For example, when I look up an item from About.com, it shows the actual lable right there.  Is it possible to just straight import the info from the website vs having to manually enter it into the database?  Just a thought.

There's really no way to just import a nutrition label from another site. You'll need to copy the information.
