I have no problem eating healthily all day but when it comes to the evening is when my good intentions fall apart. Even just after my evening meal I'm not remotely hungry but alll I can think about is eating some rubbish - and then mostly do.

Any tips for avoiding this?

Susan

If you are home at night when this happens then you could just try getting rid of all of the junk food. Or if you are like me and just have to have something sweet after dinner, try and find healthier snacks. I buy sorbet and frozen yogurt instead of ice cream. I always have my favorite fruits around and I have found some healthy recipes for muffins and cookies. I also eat popcorn (homemade) if I want something salty. I try not to eat a snack every night and I keep the portion very small when I do. (I guess the best advice would be to not eat if you are not hungry but bad habits are sometimes hard to break.) Hope this helps!

Take up a hobby that keeps your mind and hands busy. I have the same issue but have been working in the evening on genealogy and building our family tree. The hours disappear and I rarely think about snacking. Lots of hobbies can start out with small investments (spend the money on your hobby and not the food you usually eat after dinner) Even some video games can keep you occupied and develop your hand eye coordination.

I eat a banana, drink a glass of milk (usually chocolate milk), eat a weight watchers desert (only 1 of course), or even turn on the wii fit and do 15 minutes.

I have the same problem.  I get so bored that I want to eat to occupy my time.  So I took a poloroid of myself in a bra and underwear(scary), and when I feel like eating for any reason other than hunger, I drink a tall glass of ice water slowly and look at the picture.  Seeing where mindless snaking has gotten my body usually helps me out.

i have trouble with this too. a really good snack that satisfies my sweet craving is green grapes. they're juicy too so it fills you up and quenches your thirst (thirst being a very sneaky disguise for hunger!). i also agree that playing the guitar or something can occupy your time, but if you're like me it's best to have several options/hobbies, cause i'll play guitar for a while then want to do something different. try scrapbooking or even calling up friends or taking a walk outside if it's not raining. drinking water is also a nice distraction, especially if you suspect you might have an oral fixation (just always want to do something with your mouth, like smoking or eating). i never realize how thirsty i really am til i've had a bottle of water or more.

i do something similar except i keep a picture of a star or someone who is has a great body on my fridge. Its great motivation and my boyfriend doesn't mind having pictures of Jennifer Aniston or Britney Spears (before the crazy years) in our kitchen.

I've been told that a celery stick is only 3 calories and your body uses 6 calories to digest it..... so if you like celery, snack on that at night.

Personally, I hate celery.  I also eat great during the day but have trouble at night.  I've bought some of those 100 calorie packs and 80 calorie yogurt cups to help.

Overcoming this is easy, you just need to break the habit! Eating at night is not because you’re bored it's because it may be what you’re used to doing and it may be that your body is actually craving energy and the easiest thing to eat is crap junk food and sweets.

When I’m in training mode (Which incidentally what I've started yesterday and which led me to this site) "I break the habit"

If you go on the standard diet of, lets say 2500 calories (For your body type and weight) over three meals, Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner your doing good, right?... Wrong!

Your body is constantly burning up energy, even at rest and the three set meals (even if they are within your calorie limit) won't provide you with the full spread of energy throughout the day, let me give you an example of this.

  • I require 2500Kcal per day just to go about my average day (Without exercising)
  • I get up have a breakfast of approx. 400Kcals at 7am that means I need 2100Kcals over my next two meals right?
  • I get bogged down with work or chores and I put of eating until 2pm and because it’s so near my evening meal I decide to have a sandwich of approx. 500kcals. That leaves me to try and have an evening meal of 1600kcals. (Equivalent to a 12” – 14” Pizza)
  • I decide because I'm on a diet, I’ll have a healthy meal like salad or chicken and rice at approx. 850kcals, Feeling good that I've eaten healthy, or have I?
  • If you are good at math you'll see that I have under eaten by nearly 750kcals and the hunger pangs don't kick in till late at night when your body craves energy.
  • The thing is your body is a simple machine, your body will crave quick energy and everyone knows that sugar gives you energy very quickly and that’s what most people go for.

Sound familiar? I've done and I bet everyone reading this has done it.

The experts constantly tell us to eat 5 small meals a day; you can even eat 6 or even 7 meals, as long as you stay within your Kcal limit. That's why we call them experts; listen to them, their right.

Spread your meals over the day 600kcal for breakfast (7am), 400kcal Mid morning (healthy) snack (10am), 500kcal Lunch (1pm), 400kcal Mid afternoon (healthy) snack (4pm) and then have 6ookcal for your evening meal (7pm) = 2500kcal spread over the day, all you have to do is have an eating plan established throughout the day and try to keep 3hrs - 3.5hrs between meals as this keeps the energy levels up.

Do this and you'll find the habit will break easy, you won't crave the energy at night because you already have it. Combine this with exercise and the fat will simply melt away.

This is what Pro Bodybuilders do and look at how low their BMI is, but they do it to an extreme level, however the science works for everyone and if you can work out how much Kcals you need throughout the day, it will work, if you apply the will power to stick to it.

Let me know how you get on. IT WORKS, trust me.

Exactly right.....

One side note, just remember cramming those extra calories into one or two big meals is more than the "machine" can handle...

The extra is stored as energy=fat.  The idea as already said is to spread those calories out throuout the day so that the body can use what it needs... It is kind of a "just in time" ordering system if done throughout the day in small quantities...

Great topic and great reply!!!
