The foods database could use some improvements. The major areas I see are:

* Poor labels/descriptions (E.g., serving size has no label. All servings should be labeled with grams, cups, ounces, etc.)
* Redundancy (There seems to be duplicate entries for many foods)
* General option should appear at the top of the "Search for foods" drop-down menu (E.g., if the user types "chicken breast", then the most basic records for "chicken breast" should be at the top of the drop-down menu, with "Aunt Barbara's Secret Chicken Breast Recipe with Cinnamon Marinade" at the bottom)

Just responding to the food database questions with some thoughts of my own...

* Poor labels/descriptions (E.g., serving size has no label. All servings should be labeled with grams, cups, ounces, etc.)
Is this because people enter their own custom foods which then enter the database overall? If so, I don't mind it. If I read other people's entries and don't like their measurement I can just go make my own. It allows me to make serving sizes that I use more often than the standard, so I'd hate to see us HAVE to label in grams, cups, ounces ect.
* Redundancy (There seems to be duplicate entries for many foods)
Again, is this because we all make custom food entries? If so, I think its fine to have multiple, because the multiples may have different serving size sections. For example, I know there are multiple ways to enter green pepper, but one has the drop down for ounces, and the other is by whole pepper, I use one or the other depending on my need. I suppose one green pepper entry with a drop down for multiple serving sizes would serve the same purpose and be more organized though...
Though I'm not sure the logistics on this, being that the information draws from the database in some set manner (I thought alphabetical but that doesn't seem exactly true), if it were possible it would be pretty great.

Please add serving size to the drop down display when you search for a food, that way I will know which one of the 12 (seems like) "Banana" entries I should pick instead of just hunting. This will also help the issues mentioned here about several entries to choose from and make the selections easier to distinguish from one another. Thanks!

Yes, when a user creates a custom food, the serving size entry is just for informational purposes. No calculations rely on the weight information if input. This is because there is only one serving size allowed for each custom food.

Exactly. However, I plan to implement a food library so that you can see all of the info for each food and some sort of functionality to allow users to submit updates to the user that created the custom food (in case of information entered incorrectly or just invalid data).

The dropdown actually pulls data alphabetically, but puts your custom foods first, then custom foods from other users, then foods from the USDA database.
