Hi My name is Rodger I'm a 48 years old type 2 diabetic living in Victoria BC. I'm new to this sort of online fitness thing. And like a few others I've promised myself to make some changes in 2008. Beginning with my continued no i should say renewed weight loss. And hopefully will gain better control of my Diebetis my goal may seem huge to some i want to drop another 40 pounds over the next year. I was 329 pounds at one time. But dropped 80 pounds so far and was doing great until the diabetis and the meds for it set me back. Time to re-educate myself and get on with it. I look forward to reading the posts and meeting others here.

Congrats on the initial weight loss, Rodger! Everyone has set backs.. it's how we respond that shows who we are. I would suggest you look into, and talk to your doctors about, the South Beach diet. I've talked to a lot of people who have found that diet to be very successful for them.

Besides that, the best thing you can do is measurables -- weight, body fat, arm, leg, waist, stomach, chest measurements, flexibility and especially measurable goals! Set goals for yourself. Sign up for a 5k in the spring and set out to walk it in a certain timeframe. Measure your biceps and stomach and see how you've changed. Weight Loss is an important goal for obese people but the more important goal is removing body fat.  Set flexibility goals for yourself. Stretch out a tape measure or a yard stick to see how flexible you are, measure it, and then work toward a goal.

I would recommend NOT checking how well you're doing more than every couple of weeks. You'll need at least a couple weeks between measurements to see any real progress. But stick with it, you'll get there :-)

5 km is my mid week walk/run I've begun my 10km training for the 2008 TC 10km held each April in Victoria. Last year I completed the couse in 1:24:52.I'm hoping to shave at least 2 minutes or better off that time this year. I plan to lose 5 to 10 pounds and keep it off by race day Tonight I'll be driving a couple of new running routes checking the distances and grades. I like one fairly flat route thats fairly easy and quick. And a second with one or two decent hills to help build up my wind and endurance.
