This manifested on Sunday (8/1). I have done independent calculation and run several sample cycling scenarios and figured out that the currently calculated kcal is off by a factor of 10. Using the my cycling trip of today as an example, the manually input/calculated kcal is 1010, but if you remove the manual input, the site calculates 101 kcal.

Prior to 8/1, the calculation was was working correctly.

Operator error!  On one day I enetered my body fat % of 12 in the body WEIGHT field, so the cal calulation was being based on a body weight of 12# which explained the "mysterious" change.

Thanks, Trevor for your detective work on this

I too have a similar issue. Here it is:

Okay so I am adding my cardio information to the fitness log. I have come across something that just does not seem right. Maybe someone can help me with this?

Yesterday I walked 1.5 miles for one 1 hour. My average speed was 1.50 mph; pace 40:00 min/mi and the calories burned were 368.

Today I walked 1.78 miles for one 1 hour and 10 min. My average speed was 1.78 mph; pace 38:50 min/mi and the calories burned were 260.

So I walked .28 more miles and for 10 more minutes and I burned 108 less calories? This seems way off. If anyone can pick apart my numbers or if they need some more info, please ask. I am very confused about this.

Okay my info might be misleading which could factor into the numbers. First off I walked 1.10 miles this morning and then .68 miles at lunch. Separate they are worth 260 calories total. Together as 1.78 miles the are worth 420 calories. Seems like that with walking this is a threshold of sorts that once you go past 1.5 miles that you burn more calories per second. Is this a bug in the calculations or is walking really like this? I had always thought that if I walked 10 minutes 3 times a day I would burn the same amount of calories versus walking 30 minutes at one time.

(Also I tried to edit my post with this info, and the system just booted me back to the home page of the online fitness log every time I clicked edit, so I had to make a new post).

Everything looks accurate to me - calories expended for walking are calculated based on duration (distance is not a factor) - here is what I see in your account -

Your weight is also used in the calculation and that has changed dramatically over the course of 3 days.

It must have been the weight then. It did go down quite a bit, but I think cutting my calories in half did that. I was getting 3500+ before I started using this site. Keeping track of the calories was a real eye opener for how much I was consuming. Thanks for the insight Trevor. I had forgotten how much weight was involved.

Now on a related note, should I even calculate in miles walked throughout a day? I bought one of those step calculators you wear on your hip. My wife wanted to use it one day to see how much she walked. It was like 1.5 miles over the course of the day. When we put the info in the system, it said she burned like 2500 calories. I am pretty sure it as because the distance was factored in.

Should I just stick to imputing information from actually exercising, such as when we walk for 1.5 miles over the course of 30 minutes or so?

Calories for walking and every exercise (except cycling and running) are calculated solely on duration. So, even if you only walked 1.5 miles, if you entered 10 hours or something high like that, it's going to calculate calories as if you actaually walked for 10 hours (which should be much more than 1.5 miles).

Running and cycling take into account pace to calculate calories burned. This means that if you enter a distance, the system will use the average speed for the calculation, whereas if you omit the distance, it will rely on the base METs value for that exercise.

Hopefully this sheds a little more light on how calories are calculated. Basically, if the calculated value look incorrect, it is likely the duration that is causing the issue.
