The only part scaled reasonably is the duration line (measured in minutes).

Ideally a solution could be found to allow for mixing of scales, such as seperate scales on the left and right for seperate units. (I realise this might require a complete overhaul of a third-party library, so...) As an alternative measure, why not scale cardio duration by (tenths of) hours, and reduce the 'Y'-axis maximum to around 15 or 20? That would put all of the functions within the same range, and make variation in several of the functions perceivable.

Keep up the great work on a great site.

Graphs...

Is there any way to adjust the graphs on the home page? However, I have a couple UI enhancement suggestions and they are in order of how much they annoy me.

1) The loading gif is displayed for a really long time. If this is a timeout you set in js I suggest only making it a second at most, just something that is annoying me a lot because it makes the entry process painfully slow.

2) Definitely low priority but I think it would be nice to have JS auto calculate calories when working through the form. I know that it calculates it server side after submit but if you have time down the road it would be nice to see it before submit.

3) A message would be nice when doing a live search for a food and it isn't in the database. Right now it just resets to the Start Typing to select a food.

4)Not a UI thing but I keep seeing a JS error in Firebug: [Exception... "'Permission denied to get property HTMLDivElement.nodeType' when calling method: [nsIDOMEventListener::handleEvent]" nsresult: "0x8057001e (NS_ERROR_XPC_JS_THREW_STRING)" location: "<unknown>" data: no]Line 0

two good suggestions

Hi, just wanted to say i love your site. It has nearly everything you could ask for in a very well organized manner. I definitely plan on sticking with you for a good while. I'm a 5k/10k runner looking to make some big jumps this year, so i think this will help.

I only have two suggestions, and maybe they're already there and i'm just missing it.

1. reports for weekly calories in vs. out and translated into weight loss.
2. Have the program calculate the calories burned for doing certain strength exercises...say i would do 4x40 pushups and want to know the calories burned and have that added on to the main graphs. (i realize sometime this can be speculation or at least relatively difficult to calculate)

thanks again for the great site, Matt.

Heart Rate Zones

Now I know I'm just getting picky, and asking for a lot, but don't ask, don't get, right?

I just got a heart rate monitor, and I would love the capability to track the time I've spent in each heart rate zone (40%-50%, 50%-60%, etc). As an active amateur triathlete, I've just recently left beginnertriathlete.com. I left because a lot of the forums/public chat/blogging & trash-talking stuff gets out of hand on there and away from the core of the fitness/training/nutrition goals that drew me to the site to begin with; this doesn't appear to be the case with the way this site is set up. However, there are many (fitness only, as opposed to blogging) tools on the site that are very useful and I kept my account open to be able to use them. I'd love to see OFL adopt some of them if you'd care to check it out. Or, here's a couple that are favorites of mine:

Instead of (or in addition to) max speed...perhaps a calculation tool for average speed on categories such as swimming, biking, running, etc.

A route mapping feature for running/cycling/walking, etc. for which routes can be saved and made either public to the whole online community or private to an individual's account (for things like your home neighborhood routes). The mapping helps to provide both elevation and distance.

The ability to save workout templates in weightlifting and simply select them from a pull down menu when entering exercise.

Also a fan of the way their exercises are entered. I understand that categories for (since it's a triathlon site) the three disciplines (swim, bike, run) could just get moved into sports on OFL, but the site also has a very large list for strength - instead of just "weightlifting" and an extensive list for sports.

An event search feature (race nexus) where you can find races and other formal fitness events in your area in which to participate.

A reporting feature for those events where you can record your experience and results and some comments are public so that others on the forum can read them to determine if it's an event they'd be interested in as well.

There are other features as well, but many of those that remain to be mentioned are also those that tie into some of the negative community potential. These are just a few features and I appreciate a lot of the unique ones on OFL, as well, and I look forward to familiarizing myself with them. But, as it's a new site, these are just a few things that come to mind that are keeping me from exiting that site in the meantime. It may be worth checking out. Congratulations on what you've created so far!

Reji

Some ideas for the near future

I have several ideas for new functionality, but I also want to hear yours. This application is made for you, so please let me know of any features that you would like to see. I'm open to anything you have in mind and will prioritize my development based on the popularity of feature suggestions from members. Need a new report? Want to record something that doesn't currently exist? Don't like the home page (me neither!)? Let me know!
Here's a few items I have on the list for the near future:

Ability to track strength workouts in detail

Ability to save and schedule workouts

Adding several new reports (exercise distribution, calorie distribution, exercise frequency, etc)

Ability to save food combinations (i.e. meals)

Modifications to the home page - looking for suggestions as to what to include here. Will probably set it up like a portal page and allow members to show/hide modules and modify layout.

Adding totals and distribution pie charts to exercise and nutrition log entry pages

Let me know what you think of these and which are most important.

Thanks,

Birth Date

Received a comment that women are sensitive to having their age displayed publicly in the forums. :) The birth date is actually required because it is used to help calculate BMR and calories burned during exercise. In other words, when you create a custom food, it will be available for all other members of Online Fitness Log to add to their nutrition log entries. Conversely, when you search via the combo box on the nutrition log page, you will be searching not only the USDA database and your own custom foods, but all other members custom foods. This will help us build a large community database of foods not in the USDA database and avoid a lot of duplicity.

Share Log

Had an email request to add the ability to share your log with another specified user.
